Strength Classes: Which weights should I start with?

If you’ve just booked or are thinking of booking one of my strength classes in Whetstone you might be wondering about the types of weights I have available and whether they will suit you.

Sometimes, participants aren’t too sure about which weights to try and if I can’t speak with them before the class begins it’s hard to advise according to each person’s requirements so I have written this guide to help.

My weights classes are designed for lighter weights with high repetitions making them the perfect type of resistance training outside of a gym environment.

Depending on the class you have booked, I use 3 different types of weights:

  1. Dumbbells or hand weights - they come in pairs.

  2. Kettlebells - these can be plastic or metal so please take note of the weight written on the side, don’t go by the shape and size of the kettlebell as a 6kg metal kettlebell is smaller than a 3kg plastic one.

  3. Bars - the weighted bars hold the weight within the bar itself (there are no plates at each end) making them a compact tool perfect for fitness classes.

Weighted bars

Generally speaking I have 4 increments of weights in class:

  • Very light - 1kg dumbbells or 2kg kettlebell/bar

  • Light - 1.5kg dumbbells or 3kg kettlebell/bar

  • Medium - 2kg dumbbells or 4kg kettlebell/bar

  • Heavier - 2.5/3kg or over dumbbells or 6/6kg or over kettlebell/bar

These weights and increments might sound small, but using weights - however light - are the perfect start to ANYONE’S health and fitness journey, especially within a fun and achievable fitness class.

You can absolutely build muscle mass, bone density, core and all round strength using these weights.

Kettlebells

Here’s a loose guide to help you choose which weights might suit you best in class:

  • Very light: suitable for true beginners, or anyone recovering from an injury/twinges/aches and pains.

  • Light: for someone who isn’t used to using weights and experiences no injury or pain.

  • Medium: for the more confident participant

  • Heavier: suitable for anyone who wants to actively progress and challenge themselves.

Dumbbells

Resistance training (or strength training) builds muscle, increases bone density, and boosts your metabolism.

It protects your joints from injury, improves heart and metabolic health, and enhances overall longevity, mobility, and mental well-being.

It doesn’t matter which weight you choose to use in class, provided you are comfortable using it simply get started and when you feel more confident you can then progress through the weights when you feel ready and able.
